What To Eat Before Your Workout

16 Dec

Working out in the morning is a fool proof way to ensure you don’t gain weight this holiday season. With holiday parties, meetings, and errands, it can be easy for many people to miss a workout. It’s not a big deal when you miss one, but when one becomes two, two becomes three, and then ten pounds later, it becomes tough to get back to the gym. That being said, working out in the morning can be hard on an empty stomach so I’m going to tell you why you need to eat in the morning and will give you some ideas of things you can eat. You will need energy for my 6am class so fuel up!

If you wake up within an hour of your workout, your best bet is to eat some carbohydrates that will fuel your workout. If I wake up at 5 or 5:15 to teach a 6 am class, I will have an apple or banana. If you don’t like chewing anything in the morning, have 8 ounces of a sports drink or an energy gel. When you wake up 50 percent of your glycogen is depleted, which affects your endurance. Endurance capacity is related to liver glycogen content. If you are doing a light workout, this may not be an issue, but if your workout is hard, you will perform much better by replenishing your glycogen with some simple carbohydrates.

If you wake up early and have 90 minutes or more before your workout, eat something with more carbohydrates. My favorites are oatmeal, quinoa, or a fruit smoothie. This will help fuel your workout and allow you to perform at a higher level. I have reviewed the diets of over 50 of the top olympians and athletes and they all have carbohydrates before their workout. Many of them eat the same thing at the same time every day. They know what works, so why deviate from it?

Try having an apple or banana before your workout tomorrow and see how you feel during your workout. Did you have enough energy? Did your stomach feel fine? Were you weak or tired? Did you get enough sleep last night? Are you hydrated?

Let me know how your pre workout fuel affected you, respond to this blog.

And stay tune for tomorrow’s blog on what to eat after your workout.
