Jump On In

19 Jan

You only realize your potential when you are outside your comfort zone.  Many people like to stay in their comfort zone because it is safe, but safe can make you stagnant.  This word makes me think of Garfield sitting on the couch eating ice cream.  Garfield was a fun cartoon growing up, but I can never remember the cat making anything of his life.

If you want to succeed, you have to get out of your comfort zone and try something new.  It can be scary, and you may fall a few times, but with practice you will only get better.  I remember the first time I ran competitively.  I joined the Cross Country team in college and I had no idea what I was doing.  I was really nervous about my first race.  When I told a friend I was running my first 5K, she asked me what I would do if I came in last.  The thought made me nauseous.  I wrote a fitness column for the school newspaper and I had a reputation to uphold, so how on earth could I come in last?  That would be so embarrassing!  That day I went to talk to a woman who I would always see running in Greensboro, North Carolina on my way to the gym.  I asked her what if I came in last and she looked at me and said, “Madeline, all that matters is that you do it.”  And guess what, I did very well that first 5K and actually won a trophy that year in Cross Country for placing in a National Competition.  If I was scared, I would have never know what I could achieve and now I have run 15 marathons.  All because I believed the woman who said that it did not matter.

I am telling you that it doesn’t matter if you fall.  It only matters that you try.  Realize your potential, get outside your comfort zone, and be the amazing Superstar you are.  Jump on in!
