Body Composition

4 Jan

Do you have optimal body composition?  Why do I ask?  So many people tell me they want to lose weight but losing weight doesn’t necessarily mean you will look better or be in better shape.  Now if you are obese like many of the contestants on the Biggest Loser than yes, weight loss is important, but if you are looking to get a hot, defined body than you may want to focus on your body composition.

I have seen women and men lose weight and they look skinny-fat.  What is skinny-fat?  It’s when someone is thin, but not toned.  Why settle for thinner when you can look toned?  Even the celebrities are focused on getting toned.  It not only looks better, but it is better for your body.  Why?  The more lean muscle mass you have, the lower your body fat is, the healthier you are, and the higher your metabolism will be.

Okay so the scale will tell you your weight, but it won’t give you accurate readings for your water weight, fat percentage, and your lean muscle mass.  A scale can make it hard for those who work out to determine if they are making real progress.   Instead I will suggest you do two things, one, get a bodyfat analysis and measure yourself.  By focusing on bodyfat and measurements, you will see if what you are doing is working or not.  If you want to look leaner and more defined, your measurements should be decreasing and your body fat percentage should also be lower.

Many people ask me what their bodyfat should be.  It is all relative to where you are now.  Men look really good around 12 percent bodyfat and women look really good at 18% bodyfat.  So what does this look like?  At 20% bodyfat, there is no real defintion of the muscles, at 15% bodyfat, there is some defintions in the shoulders and the back, at 12% bodyfat you will see some defintion in the abdominals, and at 10% bodyfat, the six pack appears!

So how do you know what your bodyfat is?  The three methods that Timothy Ferris recommends in his book, ‘The 4 Hour Body’ is the DEXA, BodPod, and Ultrasound and tomorrow I will discuss them in greater detail and how you can get yourself tested.
