Breakfast Ideas

Start your day with a healthy breakfast.  Think of it as the fuel to get your motor running.  A nutritious breakfast is shown to increase energy, improve performance, and good for weight control.  We can eat breakfast and not gain weight?  What, it sounds too good to be true!

Now, I am not talking about the big fat doughnut you are about to put in your mouth.  Why I am busting on doughnuts?  The apple crumb doughnut from Dunkin Donuts is 490 calories, 18 grams of fat, and 80 carbs and 49 grams of sugar.  Now where would you like to slap that one on?  Any food with this many carbohydrates is sure to give you a boost of energy that will leave you feeling lethargic and craving more sweets and carbohydrates.  Why not fuel your body with something nutritious that will give you energy throughout the day.

The key to sustaining your energy throughout the day are small meals that contain carbohydrates, protein, and fat.  Here are some breakfast ideas that will give you sustainable energy, so give them a try and let me know what you think.  Also avoid calorie-ladden drinks.  You would be surprised how many grams of sugar most coffee flavored drinks have.  Next time you want one, look up the nutritional content at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts.

For the sweet tooth and calorie counter:

Kashi Heart to Heart Warm Cinnamon Oat Cereal 3/4 cup-120 cal, 25 carb, 5 grams of sugar, 4 grams of protein

1 cup of Blue Diamond Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze-40 cal, 2 carbs

For the all natural flavor, dairy and gluten-free:

1/4 cup almonds soaked overnight, 1/2 apple, 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1 tsp of agave or maple syrup, grind in a blender and you will have a nice thick consistency that will taste like a flavorful oatmeal.

For the road warrior:

Egg white, turkey sausage sandwich from Dunkin Donuts, 280 calories, 32 carbs, and 19 grams of protein

For the shake lover:

1 cup of Blue Diamond Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze, 1 cup coffee, 2 splenda, 3 ice cubes, 1 tbsp of flaxseeds, 1 tbsp of all natural almond butter, 1/2 packet of light hot chocolate, and 1 scoop of protein powder.  Blend it together and you now have the mmmmm Mocha!

For the old-school breakfast flavor:

1/2 grapefruit

3 egg whites scrambled with asparagus, 1 tbsp of feta cheese, and tomatoes

1 slice of Ezekiel Toast with 1 tsp of almond butter
